Advice for Taking Photos at The University of Tennessee

Advice for Taking Photos at The University of Tennessee

Capturing the perfect graduation photos at the University of Tennessee takes a little planning and a lot of walking—but I promise it’s so worth it. We’ll work together to create a smooth, fun session where you look your best in the places that mean the most to you. From my experience, here are a few tips to help you rock your on-campus graduation photo shoot:

Be Prepared for a Busy Campus

UTK is rarely empty, especially on weekends. Ayers Hall is also notoriously busy, and using the main stairs for photos is… honestly intense. We’ll plan for a few different angles and backup spots around Ayers (and other popular locations), and I’ll help guide you depending on how comfortable you are with people in the background.

Book Early + Know My Availability

The earlier you book, the better—prime dates go fast. I also only book on select Sundays, and I’ve found weekdays are usually the best option for these sessions because campus is typically less chaotic than weekends (less waiting, less crowding, and we can move more efficiently).

Be Prepared to Walk (and Bring Backup Shoes)

The campus is big and it’s definitely hilly. We’ll be walking between spots, so wear comfy shoes to walk in and bring your “cute” shoes for photos. Your feet will thank you later.

Add Time if You Want More Variety

The more locations and looks you want, the more time we’ll need. Plan extra time for things like outfit changes, fixing your cap, touch-ups, and just catching your breath between stops. If you want a lot of variety, we can make it happen—just don’t rush yourself.

Pick Your Must-Have Spots (In Order!)

Before your session, I’ll have you choose your most wanted locations as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and so on. We’ll start with your top priorities first. Just keep in mind: because of lines and crowds, it’s possible we may not make it to every single spot—especially during peak graduation season.

If you really want to hit additional locations, you’re always welcome to extend your session time for an added fee, depending on my availability that day.

Bring a Friend or Family Member

Bring someone who can help carry your things, adjust your outfit, hype you up, and keep you laughing. And if we’re shooting at more than one location, it’s super helpful to have someone who can hold a spot in line at one location while we’re at another—especially during peak graduation season.

Be Flexible With Timing (Especially Later in the Season)

If it’s later in the season—mid to end of March—I may recommend (or ask) that we do a morning session. It helps us beat the crowds, avoid long lines at the popular spots, and keep your session running smoothly.

Weather Happens—Flexibility Helps Here Too

East Tennessee weather can change fast, so being flexible with your date/time is always a good idea. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we’ll adjust so you still get beautiful photos without feeling stressed.

Be Kind to Your Campus

Confetti and champagne are fun, but please keep it minimal and respectful—UT is your campus, and we want to keep it clean and beautiful.

Tip: You can get free biodegradable confetti from the UT Student Government Association!
